IUPAC General Information

The Lingotto Conference Centre is a modern structure designed especially for conventions, located near downtown.

A former Fiat factory, it was restructured by the architect Renzo Piano.
The name Lingotto comes from the area of the city in which the factory was established in 1923.
The Conference Centre provides users logistical and technological support from electronic and audiovisual aids, a complete information system for visitor monitoring and services, and a Wi-Fi system.
The auditorium seats 2,000, and a number of conference and meeting halls and rooms can host audiences of various sizes. Three hotels and a number of restaurants of different classes are on the premises.

-The Town
Torino is a Roman built city, and was Italy’s first capital after Italy unification. It is now a great industrial district. Each moment in history has left its mark on the city, creating a legacy of culture, architecture and monuments. Torino is the reference point for development of new technologies and production sectors. It hosted the 2006 20th Winter Olympics Games.
Torino has a Baroque and an Art Nouveau face. It has its Royal Residences, its bridges and 18km of arcades lining the city centre. Please see the Congress web site for more information. Torino is thronged with private art galleries, foundations and permanent exhibitions, and a suite of museums that ranges from the Castello di Rivoli (museum of contemporary art), to the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (modern art), Egyptian Museum (the 2nd in the world), Museo del Cinema (movie museum), Museo dell’Automobile (car museum from the beginning of 1900), and museum of the Holy Shroud. University of Torino is one of the oldest Universities in Italy, established in 1404, and attended by 65,000 students. The temperature of Torino during the conference period usually ranges from 25 to 35°C. The conference halls are all air-conditioned.

Torino is wonderful all year long, however, most of the rain is falling between October and April. If you look at the climate, the best time to go would be between May and October when the temperatures are around 22°C.

Piedmont is mainly characterised by a continental kind of climate with a considerable range of temperature both daily and annually, since the region is protected from marine influence.
The winters are cold and dry, the summers are cool in the hills and quite hot in the plains. During the winter and autumn months banks of fog, which are sometimes very thick, form in the plains.

Within these limits the climate can be divided into three types: the alpine climate, the Padano climate and the peripheral Piedmontese climate.

As regards the average temperatures recorded in the area, the climate is not directly related to the altitude, given that the wider alpine basins often have average winter temperatures more or less the same as those of the plains and summer averages that are not very different . It is increasingly common for absolute minimum temperatures to be recorded in the plains, in residential areas.

-Currency and Banking
The currency is Euro. Foreigners can make currency exchange at all banks with cash and traveler’s checks. The exchange can also be made by credit card using special ATM machines.

Travel Information
1.Passports and Visas
Participants are strongly advised to determine which requirements apply to them with respect to entering Italy.
IUPAC sponsorship implies that entry visas will be granted to all bona fide chemists, provided application is made not less than three months in advance. If a visa is not granted one month before the meeting, the IUPAC Secretariat has to be notified without delay by the applicant.
You will receive a formal invitation, in English, to be attached to the visa application form available at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country. Please note, the Invitation Letter Request sent to the Congress Secretariat is not an application for a visa. The invitation letter you will receive from the Congress Secretariat must be submitted along with the visa application form obtained from the Embassy or Consulate and any other required documentation, as indicated in the visa application form.
2.Arrival in Torino
The LingottoConferenceCenter is not far from Porta Nuova, Torino’s main rail station, where the airport bus terminal is also located. A 15 minute connection is guaranteed by direct bus and tram lines. Motorists turning off motorways and ring roads are advised to leave exits at: – MONCALIERI coming from Piacenza, Pavia, Genoa and Savona,- STUPINIGI coming from Milan, Aosta, Fréjus and Pinerolo.Lingotto is served by underground parking areas for 3,500 cars.Access and security services are computer-monitored. In addition to the access roads to the car parks, direct backstage access is also available for heavy vehicles transporting special exhibition fittings, instruments and equipment.
By Plane
The airport of Torino Caselleis only 16 km from the town centre: 35 minutes by coach, or 25 minutes by car. It can be reached through a main road or Torino’s ring road that, thanks to its junction with the motorway network, connects it quickly to the major cities of northern Italy and southern France. TorinoInternationalAirport links are from Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Brussels, Casablanca, Clermont Ferrand, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Krakow, Lisbon, London, Luxembourg, Madrid, Munich, Paris, Stuttgart, Timisoara, Tirana, Vienna, Zurich. From the airport to the city there is the possibility to use: 1) Bus. A public bus service connects the airport with the centre of Torino from early morning until midnight and it takes about 40 minutes. Airport/city: terminal at the Arrivals level in front of domestic/EU flight gate; City/airport: terminal near the Porta Nuova railway station on the corner with via Sacchi. 2) Taxi. The airport taxi rank is on the Arrivals level in front of domestic/EU flights gate. It costs about 30 EUR. 3) Train. From the railway station at 140 metres from the airport, trains connect the airport of Caselle to Dora Station in Torino every half an hour from about 5 a.m. to about 10 p.m. The trip time is about 20 minutes. By Train
Torino is a nationally and internationally important railway junction. The main stations in Torino are: Porta Nuova: corso Vittorio Emanuele II, 53; Porta Susa: piazza XXVIII Dicembre, 8; Lingotto: via Pannunzio, 1; Stazione Dora: piazza Baldissera. Links to principal Europeans cities are provided, particularly to Paris and Lyon. Torino is also well connected to all main Italian cities: Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples.

By Car
An excellent highway network connects Torino to the main Italian and European cities. Torino can be reached not only through motorways but also through the main tunnels and passes connecting Italy, France and Switzerland

3.Urban Transportation
Buses and trams cover the whole of the city and its surroundings from morning (almost all lines start operating at 5 am) until about midnight. The tickets can be purchased at tobacconists’, newsagents and public places displaying the GTT sign. There are various ticket possibilities: the ordinary urban ticket with 70-minute validity, the 15–ticket block, and so on. Information on the best public transport to reach a site can be obtained from Torino In every district you will find taxi ranks with call phone. You may call or reserve a taxi through the switchboards of consortia and companies. Calls for taxi transport service must be addressed directly to the taxi headquarter.Torino downtown has a limited private car circulation and non-accessible streets i.e. a “Limited Traffic Zone” (ZTL) closed to traffic on defined days, hours and special occasions. Street cameras monitor all access roads.

On Wednesday there is a free afternoon for Congress participants. Local visit to Torino’s historical and best sites will be organized free of charge for regular participants. Among the most popular Torino attractions there is a suite of museums that ranges from the Castello di Rivoli (museum of contemporary art), to the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea(modern art), EgyptianMuseum (the 2nd in the world), Museo del Cinema (Movie museum), Museo dell’Automobile (car museum from the beginning of 1900), and museum of the Holy Shroud.

A few post- and pre-conference tours, as well as accompanying person tours, have been arranged, as an opportunity to appreciate traditional Piemontese culture and heritage.

1.Call for Papers
Contributed papers should be in the form of either oral or poster presentations. Participants wishing to present papers are invited to submit an abstract. Please indicate when you submit an abstract the oral or poster form you prefer. Please refer to the Final Program for the number assigned to your presentation. The scientific committee will take the final decision on the acceptance and form of the presentation. The deadline for abstract submission is post poned to June 15th.Both a short and a long abstract must be submitted.

-Short abstract. The short abstract submission is possible through the web site. In addition to the name and affiliation of authors, the body of the abstract is limited to a maximum of 1200 characters, and cannot contain figures and other objects. This submission is mandatory to be registered as authors and will be considered if the registration fee has been paid by June 15th, 2007. The short abstract will be printed in the Abstract Proceedings Book of the Congress only if the author has paid the registration fee within June, 15th 2007. The Abstract Proceedings Book will be given to all registered participants.
-Long Abstract. Authors must also submit – in addition to the short abstract of max. 1200 ASCII characters * a one/two page detailed abstract which may also include figures and tables. This more extensive abstract will be made available to the Scientific Program Committee and will also be made available on the CD of Long Abstracts (on an “as it is” basis) given to all registered participants.
The maximum permitted size of the detailed abstract is two A4 pages or 2.0 MB, whichever is less. The detailed abstract has to be submitted as .pdf file as an “first_author’slastname.pdf” file. Proofread your abstract after conversion, then upload via the on-line abstract submission system on the Congress web site. The long abstract file can also be submitted by e-mail attachment to the Secretariat before the deadline (June 10th, 2007). A template of the Long Abstract has been prepared and can be downloaded following the underlined link. The paper size of the abstract must be 21 x 29.5 cm (A4) with a margin of 3 cm on the top, 2 cm at the bottom, and 2.5 cm on the right and left. The abstract should be formatted using “Times New Roman” font throughout, single-spaced paragraphs, capitalized titles using 14 pt. type, and 12 pt. type for the body text.

Both short and long abstracts may be submitted in exceptional cases as a Microsoft Word “.doc” files. In this case the Secretariat will provide the conversion to a document.pdf of the long abstract, but it can not guarantee a correct conversion. 2.Poster presentation
There will be TWO poster sessions organized in the afternoon of Tuesday 7th, and Thursday 9th August 2007, respectively. Posters will be on display for two days (Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday and Thursday, respectively). Please refer to the Final Program for the poster number assigned to you. Your poster board has the same number as your abstract in the Short Abstract Book. A 90-cm width and 120-cm height board will be allotted for each poster display. Preferred poster size is A0. Alternatively presenters may display their material on several smaller sheets. The text, illustrations, etc. should be bold enough to be read from a distance of two meters (six feet). Tacks and technical equipment will be available for the hanging of the posters.

The plenary lectures and a selection of keynote lectures will be published in Pure and Applied Chemistry. Other papers will not be peer reviewed and will be printed in the Abstract Book of the Congress and reported on the CD of Long Abstracts.

The conference working language is English.

Overhead projectors and computer-aided projectors (for Microsoft PowerPoint presentations only) will be available. Mac computers will not be available for PowerPoint presentations.

Mac and Linux users should bring their own computer to be connected to the avaiable projectors. Machine specific cabling will not be provided by Organising Secretariat.

6.Young Chemists Programme
To encourage young chemists to participate in this unique congress, the organizers have established two distinct programs, both offering travel assistance. The first program is especially targeted to young scientists from developing and economically disadvantaged countries; the second is open to chemists from any country. About 50 awards will be made available to qualified candidates as a contribution toward their registration and travel costs.

Applications from candidates under age 40 are welcomed. Scientists from academia, government or industry can submit applications directly to the address below. Award winners will be expected to submit an abstract of a poster or paper to be presented at the Congress. These abstracts will be subject to adjudication as will all other submissions for presentation at the meeting.

There is no specific application form, but applicants are required to provide:
-a letter of application
-a brief CV
-a confirmation of their current status and affiliation
-a publication list
-a letter of support from the appropriate department head, dean, or laboratory supervisor
Estimates of the economy airfare to and from the Congress should also be provided.
